Creativity isn’t magic—it’s a process you can trigger intentionally. Whether you’re solving a tough problem, brainstorming ideas, or fighting creative block, these 10 proven triggers will help you unlock fresh thinking.

Try one today and see what happens.

1. Necessity: The Mother of Invention

“I have no time/money/resources—now what?”
Constraints force you to think differently.

Pro Tip: Give yourself an artificial limitation (e.g., “How would I do this with half the budget?” or “Solve this in 10 minutes”).

Example: Twitter’s 140-character limit sparked creative brevity.

2. Curiosity: Follow Your “What If?”

Great ideas start with questions, not answers.

Pro Tip: Spend 10 minutes researching something totally unrelated to your work. Cross-pollination sparks innovation.

Try This: “What if my [project] worked like [unrelated industry]?”

3. Opportunity Identification: Listen for Gaps

Problems really are just unmet needs in disguise.

Pro Tip: Pay attention to complaints—yours and others’. They’re goldmines for creative solutions.

Example: Airbnb emerged when its founders noticed a lack of affordable lodging during a conference.

4. Embrace Ambiguity: Get Comfortable with “I Don’t Know”

Waiting for perfect clarity kills creativity.

Pro Tip: Take one small action before you feel ready. Momentum beats overthinking.

Mantra: “Done is better than perfect.”

5. Collaboration: Borrow Someone Else’s Brain

New perspectives = new possibilities.

Pro Tip: Ask someone outside your field, “How would you approach this?”

Example: A chef’s knife design inspired a surgeon’s scalpel innovation.

6. Purposeful Daydreaming: Let Your Mind Wander

Your best ideas come when you’re not forcing it.

Pro Tip: Schedule a 15-minute “thinking walk” (no phone, no distractions, no agenda).

Science Says: Mind-wandering activates the brain’s creative default network.

7. Feedback & Iteration: Fail Faster

Early feedback turns good ideas into great ones.

Pro Tip: Share rough drafts. Say: “This is unfinished—what’s missing?”

Key Shift: Don’t ask, “Do you like it?” Ask, “What would make this stronger?”

8. Playfulness: Creativity Loves Fun

If you’re not enjoying the process, you’re overthinking it.

Pro Tip: Use brainstorming games:

“How would a 5-year-old solve this?”

“What’s the weirdest possible solution?”

9. Fear & Pressure: Use Stress as Fuel

Fear can stifle creativity, but a little urgency sharpens focus.

Pro Tip: Set a crazy-short deadline (“Solve this in 20 minutes”). Watch how instincts kick in.

Remember: Fear of failure? Reframe it as “What’s the cost of not trying?”

10. Change Your Environment: New Space, New Ideas

Your brain associates places with behaviors.

Pro Tip: Work from a café, park, or even a different room.

Bonus: Use scent (peppermint boosts alertness) or background noise (coffee shop sounds enhance creativity).

Your Turn:

Which of these triggers resonates most with you?

Comment below with your go-to (or tag someone who needs this!).

Try just one today—then notice what shifts.

Networking is often framed as a transactional activity—collecting business cards, making LinkedIn connections, and securing future opportunities. While these are valuable outcomes, there’s a deeper, often ignored benefit of networking: the unexpected, brilliant ideas that emerge from casual conversations.

As a creative person, I’ve found that some of my most original ideas didn’t come from structured brainstorming sessions, but from offhand remarks, often made during networking events. A passing comment from someone in a completely different industry, an observation from someone of a different generation, or even a cultural perspective I hadn’t considered—these interactions have led to ideas I never would have reached alone.

The Hidden Goldmine in Everyday Conversations

When we approach networking with the sole intent of ‘making connections,’ we risk missing the real magic: listening. People share insights, frustrations, and observations that can spark entirely new ways of thinking. A software developer might mention a workflow inefficiency that inspires a new productivity tool. A retired teacher might share an anecdote that reshapes how you approach customer education. A designer from another country might describe a trend that hasn’t hit your market yet.

These moments don’t happen when we’re focused on pitching ourselves—they happen when we’re fully engaged in the conversation.

The Power of Diverse Perspectives

One of the most refreshing aspects of group networking is the mix of backgrounds, ages, nationalities, professions, and outlooks. Unlike homogenous groups where ideas often echo one another, diverse networks introduce friction—in the best possible way. Different thinking styles challenge assumptions, expose blind spots, and open doors to innovation.

A finance expert might approach a problem analytically, while an artist sees it intuitively.

A young entrepreneur may prioritise speed, while a seasoned executive considers long-term resilience.

Someone from a different culture might highlight a solution that’s standard in their country but unheard of in yours.

This variety is priceless. The more varied your network, the richer your pool of inspiration.

How to Network for Ideas, Not Just Contacts

If you want to tap into this overlooked benefit of networking, shift your approach:

Listen More Than Talk – Instead of focusing on what you can get, pay attention to what others are saying. What problems do they mention? What unique perspectives do they have?

Engage with People Outside Your Field – Some of the best ideas come from cross-pollination between industries.

Follow Up with Curiosity – If someone says something intriguing, dig deeper. A simple, ‘That’s fascinating—tell me more about how that works,’ can lead to unexpected insights.

Keep an Idea Journal – Note interesting thoughts or observations from conversations. Either on paper or your phone, while they’re still fresh. Revisit them later—they might be the seed of your next big idea.

Final Thought

Networking isn’t just about who you know—it’s about what you learn from them. The next time you’re at an event, resist the urge to ‘work the room‘ for contacts. Instead, immerse yourself in conversations. You might walk away with more than a new connection—you might walk away with a brilliant idea.

Have you ever had a casual remark at a networking event lead to a breakthrough? I’dlove to hear about it!

Remember when you were a child? Everything was a possibility. A cardboard box wasn’t just a box; it was a spaceship, a castle, a time machine! We were all born with a spark of creative genius, an innate ability to see the world with fresh eyes and dream up incredible things. So, what happened?

Well, life happened. We went to school, learned rules, and started worrying about ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ answers. We traded our crayons for spreadsheets and our imaginations for deadlines. Sound familiar?

Dr. George Land’s fascinating study, originally designed for NASA, showed us just how much we lose that natural creative flair. He tested kids at different ages and found that a staggering 98% of 4 and 5-year-olds scored at ‘creative genius’ level. But as they grew, those numbers plummeted. By adulthood, only 2% scored that high. That’s a big drop, right?

It’s not that we lose our ability to be creative; it’s more like we bury it under layers of ‘adulting.’ We become afraid of looking silly, or making mistakes, or just letting our minds wander. But here’s the good news: we can dig that creative spark back out!

I had one of my team who had a voracious capacity for work, but rarely produced anything fresh. Give her a task and she would leap into it and not stop until it was completed. I had to suggest she stopped for breaks, time to think, relax, review and re-charge. At times, I even had to intervene and slow her down. Have a chat, ask about her hobbies and home. It took time but her work developed a new spark and better solutions.

Think of it like learning a language you’ve forgotten. It might take a little practice, but it’s totally possible. Here are some playful ways to get started:

Embrace Playtime:

Remember how much fun you had as a kid? Reclaim that joy! Doodle, build Lego structures, play with modelling clay. Let your inner child lead the way. Take ‘play breaks’. Your mind will carry on working for you.

Try something that has no pressure to be ‘good’.

Ask ‘What If?’ More Often:

Kids are masters of ‘what if’ questions. Ask yourself, ‘What if I tried this new approach?’ or ‘What if I looked at this problem from a different angle?’

This is a great technique to use with your team. Turn it into a game.

Break Your Routine:

Our brains love patterns, but they can stifle creativity. Take a different route to work, try a new hobby, or rearrange your furniture.

Even small changes can have a big impact.

Get Curious:

Explore something new! Read books on topics you know nothing about, visit museums, or watch documentaries. Curiosity is the fuel of creativity.

Embrace Mistakes:

Kids don’t worry about making mistakes; they just keep trying. Adopt that attitude! Mistakes are opportunities to learn and grow.

Reframe mistakes as learning experiences.

Collaborate and Brainstorm:

Talking to other people (and listening) will provide you with new perspectives.

Remember, creativity isn’t about being perfect; it’s about exploring, experimenting, and having fun. All those creative abilities are still there. Time to find where we buried them!

The world of web design is on the brink of a dramatic transformation. Over the past decade, the industry has evolved rapidly, driven by technological advancements, changing user behaviours, and the rise of new tools. Today, we stand at the precipice of another major shift, one that will redefine how websites are created, consumed, and maintained. From the dominance of mobile-first design to the rise of AI-powered platforms, the future of web design is both exciting and unpredictable.

The Mobile-First Movement

The shift to mobile browsing has been one of the most significant drivers of change in web design. According to Statcounter, mobile devices accounted for over 60% of global website traffic in 2024, up from just 31% in 2015. This trend forced designers to rethink their approach, prioritising simplicity and functionality over flashy, feature-heavy designs.

Modern websites are now built with vertical scrolling in mind, optimised for touchscreens rather than mouse clicks. Buttons are larger, menus are streamlined, and content is designed to load quickly on slower mobile networks. The ‘mobile-first’ philosophy has become the gold standard, with designers often starting their process by creating for smaller screens and scaling up to desktop versions.

This approach has also led to the decline of bloated, over-designed websites. As users demand faster load times and smoother experiences, designers are stripping away unnecessary elements, focusing on clean layouts and intuitive navigation. According to Google, 53% of mobile users abandon a site if it takes longer than three seconds to load, underscoring the importance of speed and efficiency in modern web design.

Content Reigns Supreme

While design trends come and go, one thing remains constant: content is king. In fact, it’s more important than ever. With the rise of social media and platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, users have grown accustomed to engaging, visually-driven content. Web designers are taking cues from these platforms, incorporating best practices such as bite-sized information, eye-catching visuals, and interactive elements.

The emphasis on content has also led to the rise of storytelling-driven design. Websites are no longer just a collection of pages; they’re experiences that guide users through a narrative. This shift has been particularly evident in industries like e-commerce, where brands use storytelling to connect with customers on an emotional level.

The AI Revolution in Web Design

If mobile-first design and content-driven strategies have been the defining trends of the past decade, AI is poised to be the game-changer of the next. Artificial intelligence is already making waves in the web design industry, with platforms like Wix ADI, Framer, and Webador offering ‘instant website’ solutions. These tools allow users to create fully functional websites in minutes, simply by answering a few prompts or providing basic information.

While the results are still relatively simple compared to custom-designed sites, the potential is undeniable. AI-powered design tools can generate layouts, write copy, and even suggest colour schemes based on user input. For small businesses and individuals looking to establish an online presence quickly and affordably, these platforms are a game-changer.

But AI’s impact goes beyond just templated designs. Advanced AI tools are beginning to assist designers with more complex tasks, such as optimizing user experiences, predicting user behavior, and automating repetitive tasks like coding and testing. For example, tools like Figma’s AI-powered features can generate design variations or suggest improvements based on user data.

What Does This Mean for Web Agencies and Designers?

The rise of AI and no-code platforms has sparked concerns about the future of web design as a profession. Will AI replace human designers? The answer is nuanced. While AI can handle simple, straightforward projects, complex, function-heavy websites will still require the expertise of skilled designers and developers.

However, the role of designers is likely to evolve. Rather than focusing on repetitive tasks, designers will increasingly act as strategists and creative directors, leveraging AI tools to bring their visions to life more efficiently. For web agencies, this means adapting to new business models, such as offering AI-enhanced services or specializing in high-end, custom solutions that AI cannot replicate.

The Client Perspective

For clients, the future of web design is both exciting and daunting. On one hand, AI-powered tools make it easier than ever to create a website, often at a fraction of the cost of traditional design services. On the other hand, the sheer number of options can be overwhelming, and not all AI-generated websites will meet the unique needs of every business.

Clients will need to carefully consider their goals and budget when choosing between DIY platforms and professional design services. While AI can deliver quick results, a human touch is still essential for creating truly unique, brand-aligned experiences… for now.

The Road Ahead

The world of web design is changing faster than ever, driven by mobile-first principles, the primacy of content, and the transformative power of AI. Looking to the future, one thing is clear: the industry will continue to evolve, offering new opportunities and challenges for designers, agencies, and clients alike.

For those willing to embrace change and adapt to new technologies, the future of web design is bright. Whether you’re a seasoned designer, a business owner, or simply someone with a passion for the web, one thing is certain: the best is yet to come.

What are your thoughts on the future of web design? Do you think AI will replace human designers, or will it simply enhance their capabilities?

7 Old-School Marketing Approaches That Still Pack a Punch in the Digital Age

In today’s AI-driven, digitally dominated world, it’s easy to overlook traditional marketing methods. However, these time-tested strategies can add significant impact and variety to modern campaigns. Here are seven old-school marketing approaches that still deserve a place in your marketing toolkit.

1. Direct Mail Campaigns

Despite the digital takeover, direct mail remains a powerful tool for reaching customers. A well-crafted physical piece of mail can cut through the digital clutter, offering a personal touch that emails often lack. Of course the cost can’t compare to email for bulk mailing, but here’s a great approach.

Suppose you want to target just ten key prospects. You could create ten memorable, personalised, 3-d mailing pieces. Send stand-out items that are sure to grab attention. Don’t forget the follow-up call, you’ll really have something to talk about.

Why It Works: People appreciate tangible items in a world overwhelmed by digital communication. Direct mail can also be highly targeted, ensuring your message reaches the right hands.

2. Guerilla Marketing

Guerilla marketing is all about creativity and surprise. This unconventional approach involves creating unexpected, attention-grabbing experiences in public spaces. Think of flash mobs, eye-catching street art, or unique promotional impacts that get people talking.

Why It Works: Guerilla marketing is cost-effective and generates buzz through word of mouth and social media sharing, often resulting in viral campaigns that reach far beyond the initial audience.

3. Handwritten Notes

In an era where most communication is digital, a handwritten note stands out. Whether it’s a thank-you card to a loyal customer or a personalised follow-up after a meeting, this small gesture can leave a lasting impression.

Why It Works: Handwritten notes feel personal and thoughtful, fostering strong emotional connections and enhancing customer loyalty.

4. Event Sponsorships

Sponsoring local events, trade shows, or industry conferences can significantly boost brand visibility and credibility. By associating your brand with a relevant event, you can directly engage with your target audience in a meaningful way.

The key word here is ‘relevant’. Choose the right event and you’ll have the ability to build on it throughout your other promotional activity.

Why It Works: Event sponsorships offer face-to-face interaction, allowing you to build relationships, gather feedback, and create memorable brand experiences.

5. Public Relations and Media Outreach

Despite the rise of social media, traditional PR and media outreach remains vital. A well-placed press release, an interview in a relevant publication, or a feature on a local broadcast channel can lend authority and reach to your brand that digital ads can’t always achieve.

Why It Works: Earned media carries a level of trust and credibility that paid media often lacks, helping to establish your brand as a leader in your industry.

6. Referral Programs

Referral marketing taps into the power of word-of-mouth, one of the oldest and most effective marketing strategies. By incentivising your existing customers to refer friends, family, or colleagues, you can organically grow your customer base.

Why It Works: People trust recommendations from their network, making referrals a highly effective way to acquire new customers who are already predisposed to trust your brand.

7. Sampling and Free Trials

Offering product samples or free trials is a classic marketing tactic that can still yield impressive results. Letting potential customers experience your product or service firsthand can convert interest into sales.

If you’re in a service industry that depends upon quality of customer experience, until people try you they won’t know how good you are.

Link this with number 6, above.

Why It Works: Sampling and trials reduce the risk for the customer, allowing them to make informed purchasing decisions based on direct experience.

Conclusion

While AI and digital marketing tools are essential in today’s landscape, incorporating these old-school techniques can add depth and variety to your strategy. They remind us that sometimes, the most impactful marketing approaches are the ones that create genuine, human connections. By blending the old with the new, you can create a well-rounded marketing strategy that resonates with a broader audience.

What will be the Most Important Skill in an AI World?

As AI continues to revolutionise industries and take over more day-to-day tasks, one question looms large: What’s the most important skill in an AI world? The answer, surprisingly, is a very human one: creativity.

Why Creativity Matters

In a world where machines can handle data processing, routine decision-making, and even complex problem-solving, the unique ability to generate new, unique, and original solutions to problems remains distinctly human.

Creativity allows us to see beyond the data, to imagine possibilities that don’t yet exist, and to innovate in ways that machines cannot. It’s this spark of originality that will be in high demand as we move further into the age of AI.

The Human Edge

AI is incredibly powerful, but it’s fundamentally constrained by the data it has been trained on and the algorithms it follows. While AI can optimize and enhance, it can’t truly create something novel out of nothing.

This is where humans have the edge. Our ability to think outside the box, to connect seemingly unrelated ideas, and to dream up entirely new concepts is irreplaceable.

Can Creativity Be Taught?

Absolutely, creativity can be taught and nurtured. Just like any other skill, it requires practice, patience, and the right environment to flourish. Here are a few ways to develop creative skills:

Expose Yourself to New Experiences

Embrace Curiosity

Create Without Fear

Collaborate with Others

Practice Problem-Solving

Learn from the Best

Not only are these great tactics for individuals, but essentials activities for building a creative culture within teams or companies.

Creativity courses and help

There’s plenty of help to make progress in the creative world. Online courses, group learning, one-to-one lessons or creative mentoring. Choose what best suits your learning style – but invest a little time in enhancing your creative thinking

Preparing for the Future

As AI continues to advance, the need for creative thinkers will only grow. Companies will look for individuals who can drive innovation, lead creative projects, and envision the next big thing. By developing your creative skills now, you’ll be positioning yourself for success in an AI-driven world.

So, start nurturing your creativity today. Experiment, explore, and most importantly, embrace the uniquely human ability to create. The future is bright for those who can think beyond the algorithms and bring fresh, original ideas to the table.

In the end, while AI may handle the routine, it’s creativity that will shape the future.

Let’s get creative and be ready to lead the way.

Marketing Drama: Are Creative and Production Getting a Divorce?

In the grand soap opera of business, there’s a subplot brewing that’s worthy of its own primetime drama: the crumbling relationship between creative and production in the world of marketing. Like any good TV drama, it’s filled with tension, twists, and the occasional dramatic exit. But unlike most TV dramas, this one involves less shouting matches and more presentations.

Picture this: Creative, the imaginative dreamer overflowing with ideas, and Production, the diligent executor armed with the latest tech tools, have been partners in crime for years. They’ve crafted campaigns, launched products, and wowed audiences together. But lately, cracks have begun to form in their once rock-solid relationship.

The flames were fanned with the rise of AI and the democratisation of content production. Suddenly, every small business with a laptop and an internet connection could churn out slick ads and polished content with the click of a button. Production, once the exclusive domain of experts, was now as accessible as a YouTube tutorial.

But while Production was off gallivanting with its newfound tech toys, Creative started feeling neglected. Sure, anyone could slap together a flashy video or a snazzy website, but where were the big ideas? The bold concepts? The spark that sets a brand apart from the rest?

It’s like Creative woke up one day to find that Production had packed its bags and run off taking all the fancy gadgets, leaving behind a note saying, “It’s not you, it’s me.”

The Drama goes on.

And so, the rift widened. Creative felt misunderstood, underappreciated, while Production felt patronised by Creative’s lofty demands and unrealistic expectations. It was a classic case of irreconcilable differences.

But here’s the twist: despite the tension, Creative and Production still need each other. Sure, Production can churn out content at lightning speed, but without Creative’s vision and ingenuity, it’s like a Ferrari without a driver – flashy, but ultimately directionless.

On the other hand, Creative can dream up the most brilliant campaign in the world, but without Production to bring it to life, it’s just a bunch of ideas and clever slogans stuck in someone’s imagination.

As so often, in rocky relationships money is involved. Tech helps Production to work cheaply – Creative is selling intangibles.

So, what’s the solution? Well, perhaps it’s time for Creative and Production to attend couples therapy – or in business terms, collaborate more closely than ever before. Instead of seeing themselves as adversaries, they should embrace their differences and work together to create something truly magical.

After all, in the world of marketing, the most successful campaigns are born from the perfect marriage of creativity and production prowess. So, here’s to hoping that Creative and Production can patch things up, reignite the spark, and live happily ever after – at least until the next marketing novelty comes along.

Dripping out information is a smart way to keep visitors and readers holding on for more. Authors and screen-writers have mastered the art. Of course they could probably tell their whole story in chapter one, but by adding increasingly interesting facts and content chapter by chapter, they secure your engagement.

The successful ploy is to always build a section full of excitement and interest, just at the end – then you MUST read the next chapter or watch the following episode. It’s the classic cliff-hanger.

But we can learn a lot from these structures in creating content for ads, campaigns and videos. And the main trick is anyways to hold a little back – to intrigue.

When we are creating content, most often, the important objective is to secure a response. If your reader or viewer responds with a click, message or call, you then have the opportunity to open a dialogue.

Because we all love our product or service, the temptation is to try to pack in as much information as we can in our communication. But that’s just a monologue – what we want is to start a dialogue – a conversation. Then we can have the opportunity to close a sale. That’s why it can be good to hold something back, to leave the reader wanting more! Or at least to hint that there is more, better, more interesting stuff still to learn.

If someone builds a wall, you can be sure that the next person will be desperate to learn what’s behind it!

Having made the reader or viewer aware of our offering, the story must offer information in a way that engages and stimulates interest. That’s where less is more. It’s a case of concise content that does not bore or overwhelm but leads to desire. Unless we’re in a situation which leads directly to a sale (Action) – in e-commerce for example – we’re looking for another kind of action.

That action can be a contact, a clicked link, e-mail or perhaps phone call. And why would our prospect make that action? Because we have created that interest and thirst for more information – we have intrigued.

Don’t let your claims get caught in the ‘So what’ trap.

The claims you make about your product or service are so important. Whether you are writing an ad, or a post, making presentations, video or creating an elevator pitch – there is one golden rule. Steer clear of making a statement to which your customer can think, ‘So what?’

Generally this happens when you’re busy talking about yourself or your business. You are rightfully proud of your history, what you have achieved, and probably of some clever developments. But, although your customers may listen politely they are truly only interested in what you can do for them. That’s where the acid test – the ‘so what‘ test comes in.

Check your pitch, your claims and statements critically – and if you are not making really clear the undeniable benefits you offer, perhaps you are falling into the trap.

And this applies to more than words – check images too. Businesses often show pictures of their factory, or packing line – or perhaps some component normally hidden deep in their product – they are proud of these images – but do they directly contribute to the benefit as the customer sees it?

It’s not just about money

It’s true, that the benefits of doing business with you are commonly to do with making income or saving costs, but those are not the only ones. People make choices for less obvious reasons, such as lifestyle, identifying with or conforming to groups, creating a sense of identity, environmental or political stances. These are emotional benefits and can be very powerful, but often the claims need to be more implicit than explicit. You need to ensure they align with the customers’ needs – not yours. So apply the ‘So what?’ test when reviewing your claims to steer clear of this common trap.

Turn ‘so what?’ into ‘tell me more!‘

Marketing technology is steadily changing business’ approach to innovation.

The traditional approach was to take a creative idea, analyse, research, develop, commercialise and test throughly. Then, only when a significant understanding and probability of success could be guaranteed was it put up for approval. Investment in a new idea was risky. Extensive research has been the recognised solution to minimising risk.

Modern technology coupled with agile approaches has allowed marketers to mix intuition with tried approaches and bring new ideas to market sooner at low cost. Innovation can be applied monitored and evaluated in near real-time.

Argos has introduced the facility for customers to use Google Home smart devices for voice shopping. They’re the first UK retailer to do so, despite competition from Amazon, who has its own-brand Echo speakers.

Customers will be able to check product availability and reserve items in store, via Google Assistant.

Company and customers experiment

The most interesting aspect is the company’s approach, mixing intuitive judgement with testing. Not only is the retailer exploring the opportunity, but also encouraging the customer to investigate and experiment with it. One assumes that development and refinement will progress hand-in-hand with user feedback.

Argos chief executive John Rogers described their approach as “trying and testing”, with the launch of an app on Google Home.

This could prove to be another groundbreaking step in retail marketing. Only time will tell, but the important issue for marketers is that we now have the ability to explore such possibilities quickly without scary levels of investment.

It’s another fascinating and encouraging demonstration of marketing technology lowering the barriers to innovation being brought to market.
